Our Church Building

The present building is the third of the Church, and dates from 1835. The first, built in 1695, stood immediately to the north of the present building, and was also the town hall. This proved too small by 1724 when the second meeting house was "raised". The present building originally had no steeple, narthex or vestibule, and had no vestry. These were added between 1870 and 1879. For more about our building see our August BELL.

HALLOWEEN in 1937

Back in 1937, a group of teenage girls came to the church vestry to decorate for their Halloween party. Of course, a tub of water was included for bobbing for apples. Just before everyone left to go home, they stood around admiring the decorations. One of the girls, stepping backwards, sat right down into the tub (just the edge). All enjoyed a good natured laugh except for the one who got wet!
The party ended up being a great success. There are some long-standing members still in our church today who remember that decorating day, including the one who got wet!

From the
1964 Annual Report

“On May 17th, the cross and candlesticks given by church members and friends as a memorial to Dr. Philip A. Swartz, (who was an interim pastor) and the altar on which they stand, designed and so carefully constructed by Mr. Lloyd Case, were dedicated during the Sunday School Service.”
