The North Garden in the Heart of the Historic Commons
Designed by nationally-acclaimed landscape architect and longtime Little Compton resident, John Gwynne, this project will include a permanent ramp for the church's new north entrance and meditative outdoor landscaping.
The cornerstone of the project will be the installation of a permanent, universally-accessible ramp, beautifully made using locally-sourced, antique bluestone. The outdoor space, like the church building itself, will be beautiful yet simple in design, and will include the installation of understory trees and shrubs (i.e. combination of flowering, evergreen, and deciduous specimens) that surround the lawn area, and provide a layer of beauty and greenery. This space has been thoughtfully designed to feel like it has always been a part of the church and the Commons. It will be an extension of the church's interior sanctuary -- a meditative and communal space, a place to celebrate and remember, a multi-functional place where all are welcome. We can not imagine a more important time to invest in this transformative, flexible, and simply beautiful outdoor space that imagines and will ultimately demonstrate what is possible when our church and our greater Little Compton community come together in a single effort of vision, generosity, and hope. |
